Gear changes through the years//mailing gear home.

Gear changes/gear mailed home

I recently responded to a post on Reddit that was followed by a request for permission to quote me.

The post asked about gear sent home. I realized that I rarely send gear home on trail.

Change gear at home? Yes. Most gear changes I blog about are ones made at home between hikes.

  • Tents.
  • Sleeping bags.
  • Shoes that were not worn out.

Drop things in a hiker box? Yes!

  • When I changed from titanium fish hooks to groundhogs. The ones I didn’t give to another hiker got hiker boxed.
  • Partial gear failures or losses (one trekking pole out of two lost or broken) go into the box.
  • That notable hoodie failure—into the box (and someone grabbed it immediately.

But mail things home? Not really that often.

  • Happy6 did mail her umbrella home several times but then she hiker boxed it.
  • A couple clothing items have been mailed home. Like a rain jacket that was failing a little (I still use it off trail from time to time).
  • Thermarest pads that spring leaks I can’t find. Mail those home and send them in for repairs later.

Current weather

April snow depth report

Just following the reports. There is a huge drought shaping up.

Looks like June 1 is looking like our restart date this year.

Hiking south from Walker Pass.

Toothpaste

Tooth pellets

Chew one up and then brush your teeth. The package seals up the smell.

Travel sized toothpaste

Happy6 has made some homemade pellets. We went back to travel sized toothpaste.

But I am seriously considering the pellets.

Naturehike tent

For $139 and 2.65 pounds it isn’t a bad economy option for one person on a budget.

This is especially true since the Ozark Trails one person tent that was actually suitable seems to have disappeared from the market.
