And Baby G was early

So. We had plans to get off trail in about ten days to help out with a new grandchild.

But, just as we got to Chestnut Knob Shelter (mile 569.7) we got news she was ahead of schedule.

We needed off the mountain—on a day the Amish shuttle wasn’t running.

That caused us to alter our plans. https://ethesis.wordpress.com/2019/04/29/flip-flopping/

Luckily there was a guy whose wife was driving up to give him a resupply and dropping us off at the airport would only take five extra minutes for her.

Better. He was out of fuel. She hadn’t brought any. We had a new can of fuel we could give him. We also gave away a lot of food.

Other hikers were pleased.

Good Days… Chestnut knob shelter

For us an elevation gain of 400+ flights of stairs in a day is noteworthy. 350+ is significant and 200 or less is “meh.”

Today was really windy. We made it to Chestnut Knob Shelter (mile 569.7) and are calling it a day.

It was also over 400+ flights of vertical.

A good day.

And yes. More than 400 flights of stairs climbed including a more than two thousand foot unbroken ascent.

Rain, storms, Bear Garden mile 558.3. One fourth of the way completed.

Win predicted we would be soaked at day’s end and made reservations days ago.

Fence bridge

We arrived wet to the bone. Packs were dry but I was grateful for her foresight.

That is us crossing the fence to walk along a flooding river. We got to the bridge while it was still a bridge and not a ford (river was rising).

Drying out at Bear Garden Hostel now.

At Long Neck Lair

We’ve arrived in Atkins and the Alpaca (not llama) farm.

Calling it an early day to enjoy spring and let the thunderstorm roll by.

Sang songs about Llamas to hike too. Glad they were Alpacas. Those are friendlier than Llamas.

Mile 534 —Friendship Shelter after the ponies

Well, water wasn’t working at the shelter, no cell service and a huge crowd, so we caught a shuttle into Marion for fifty cents.

I’m updating while I have internet.

But we got to see the ponies, hike up and down a mountain using a live stream bed and had some wonderful days.
