of the growth pattern for the site makes it appear that the growth is a sine
wave. In reality, the statistics package does not catch web pages served
from cache, only those pulled from the disk. Every time the server
is adjusted for volume, etc. the cache effectiveness goes up and apparent
hits decline. Then growth occurs until the next readjustment. Caching
runs between 20% and 40% (at least as far as javascript calls seem to reflect)
so that 100,000 hits = somewhere between 120,000 and 140,000 hits.
Relevant page views are probably 10% of the hit numbers (the site is
light on graphics and most pages use the same set so that once served they
are not called again. On the other hand, many hits on the site are
the result of calls that are not relevant).
