Web Page Design and Implementation
This list is not exhaustive.
Books
| Basic or interesting web page design books. Barnes & Noble
will sell these at a substantial discount, but your local bookstore
may have them as well. |
-
Creating Killer Web Sites by David Siegel. This is a basic literacy
book. I disagree with a number of points the book makes (e.g.
I'm not fond of the "naked" splash page approach that Siegal is in love with
-- see my essay on click through, hooks &
bait), and for the price it should have included a CD (they only cost
fifty cents to press). However, this book is the dominant influence
on much of web page design on the net.
-
WEB PAGES THAT SUCK: Learn Good Design by Looking at Bad Design by
Vincent Flanders and Michael Willis ISBN: 078212187X Retail Price: $39.00
-- A fun book.
-
DYNAMIC HTML WEB MAGIC WITH CDROM ISBN: 1568304218 Retail Price: $39.99.
If you are considering dynamic HTML on a web site, a CD ROM with lots of
examples to cut and paste sure makes getting the rough draft up a lot
easier. Of course skipping dynamic HTML is easier still <g>.
-
ELEMENTS OF WEB DESIGN by Darcy Dinucci and Maria Giudice ISBN: 0201696983
Retail Price: $39.95
-
Creating Great Web Graphics by Laurie McCanna (WD Laurie). Step
by step instructions for creating the type of graphics you often see on the
web. I prefer simplier graphics (as you can see throughout my site),
but not everyone has such simple needs or desires.

Useful Books

-
Marketing Without Advertising by Michael Phillips & Salli
Rasberry. This book actually appreciates that advertising is necessary and
appropriate in some cases, but explains the underlying concepts that create
and nourish a marketing plan.
-
Creating Your Own America Online Web Pages by Andy Shafen and Todd
Stauffer. This book is less than 1% about AOL and 80% on what makes
a good web page design. It would have made a great syllabus book
(inexpensive and solid) if it had been available then. An excellent
book to read to supplement your other reading on the subject. The CD
has the full text of some excellent other books on it. (The CD is the
cheapest way to get a copy of Using HTML, Special Edition, by Mark
Brown, John Jung and Tom Savola, Que Books).
-
HTML Publishing Bible by Alan Simpson. Sells for around $31.49,
with CD, etc. About 775 pages of material.

Learn J++ Java Now by Stephen R. Davis. Includes (on CD) Microsoft
Developer Studio, Sun Microsystems' Abstract Windows Tool Kit, Visual J++,
examples and a clear lesson progression. List price is $39.95.

straightforward CGI programing instruction with examples.
