SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES

Introduction

The purpose of these lessons is to help you remember to worship God, to come unto Christ, to be born again, and to be more fully converted to the Lord.

See Helaman 15:7-8

The process for men to worship God, come to Christ, be born again, and become converted to the Lord begins with, and is nourished by, prayer and searching the scriptures.

And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the Church of Christ; and their names were taken that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and finisher of their faith.

Moroni 6:4

Personal Search of the Scriptures

1. Why should we search the scriptures?

Read the following scripture and underline the important words.

And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction.

1 Nephi 15:24

Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a straight and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked --

And land their souls, yea their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out.

In talking about the effect of the word of God, the prophet Alma said:

Behold, he changed their hearts; yea he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word; yea, they were encircled about by the bands of death, and the chains of hell, and an everlasting destruction did await them.

And behold, he preached the word unto your fathers, and a mighty change was also wrought in their hearts, and they humbled themselves and put their trust in the true and living God. And behold, they were faithful until the end; therefore they were saved.

Alma 5:7,13

Read the above scripture again and underline the important words.

4. How should we search the scriptures?

Study the scriptures in the outline. You may wish to read some of them out loud, to underline important words in others, and to mark some of them in your scriptures. You may also want to consider copying some into your journal or assigning a scripture to each family member to read out loud and to talk about.

Family Scripture Study

Family study is much like personal study, only with more people. In addition to the above scriptures that talk about personal study, there are two suggested scriptures for you to read:

Deuteronomy 6:7

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

1 Nephi 5:21

And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desirable; yea, even of great worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments of the Lord unto our children.

How might you share the scriptures and the stories in them with your family, spouse and children?

Read the quotations from General Authorities. Think about how the quotes fit in with the need for family prayer and the scriptures you have read. Write in your journal any thoughts you might have.
