Survey Responses

What follows is the total inventory of answers to questions #8 and #9 on the Directory page -- the "wish list" for members, essentially. Some were requested by lots of people, some by only one -- but they're all here. (I left out the ones that would actually require miracles, like "more hours in the day so I could read everything," but I endorse them.) I plan to put a section in an upcoming issue in which I compile all this into more manageable categories and discuss what can and can't be done, what help would be needed, and so on. In the meantime, I'd very much like your input on this list, as well as any additions you'd like to make.

  • ** An L&SF Web page, home page, with archives of back issues of the newsletter
  • ** A longer newsletter.... (I'm not kidding, that really is one of the requests)
  • ** Much clearer statements in the sections on religious language
  • ** Longer articles, more in-depth explanations
  • ** Bring back the section on Ozark English
  • ** A correspondence course in linguistics
  • ** More references to articles, books, etc.; more bibliography
  • ** A newsletter section devoted specifically to reviews of sf work on linguistics
  • ** Less "fuzziness" in the newsletter (This member feels that I often include material that is neither focused on sf nor on linguistics)
  • ** A better name for the newsletter (with the network name unchanged)
  • ** A newsletter section for puns, brief "bumper sticker" sayings, and the like
  • ** Regularly updated "ten best" lists for linguistics (general), impact/programming of language, gender differences, and the mind/body/language connection
  • ** The Network would send out press releases and similar materials to get the importance of sf and linguistics into popular media
  • ** An actual test of the validity of the propositions in our mission statement
  • ** A lot more work on metaphors
  • ** Lots more reviews of science fiction work
  • ** An L&SF BBS, discussion list, or something of that kind, to allow more interaction
  • ** More detailed presentation of Suzette Haden Elgin's opinions of material in newsletter
  • ** An index to all issues from the beginning, so things could be found easily and quickly
  • ** A place in the newsletter for competing points of view
  • ** A "Letters to the Editor" section in the newsletter
  • ** Expansion of the language and gender sections to include the gay/lesbian movement
  • ** Material in newsletter on computer languages and computational linguistics
  • ** A regular "Questions for Suzette" section, with answers compiled into an FAQ document
  • ** Lots of demystification of linguistics
  • ** Put the newsletter on CDRom and/or audiotape
  • ** Put all the references and citations in each newsletter issue together on a separate page instead of in the main text
