1. www.homestead.com
   • Great software for putting a site together.  Minimal intrusion from advertisements.
   • My solid second place choice.
2. Xoom
   • A personal favorite.  No advertisements on the site, but you do get e-mail advertisements (that you can opt out of.  I opted out of my Xoom site, but I keep the advertisements coming because they are worthwhile).
   • Lots of handholding, the largest image collection on the web.  Includes on-line conferencing software (chat software) for your site.
3. Tripod
   • Pop-up advertisements, cookie cutter site design.
   • But, Tripod supports FrontPage97 if you are using that software package.
4. GeoCities
   • Features the original browser crashing pop-up advertisements.  I generally refuse to visit.
   • On the other hand, the page building editor is good and you get 11 megabytes of space.
5. Angelfire
   • Pop-up advertisements.
   • A solid "fair" sort of place.
6. theglobe.com
   • Pop-up advertisements.  Will crash some browsers, makes a site look cheap.  Rigid site design.
   • On the other hand, there is more of a sense of community here.
7. Netscape
   • Brash newcomer.
   • Solid oldtimer.  An interesting combination.

Also, you can visit AOL for some interesting faqs and tutorials, even though they do not provide free space to non-AOL members.  http://hometown.aol.com/ and navipress (in its latest incarnation) is available for free from aolpress.com.
