The topic of this supplement:
Locations for free web page hosting (with comments):
-
www.homestead.com
-
Great software for putting a site together. Minimal intrusion from
advertisements.
-
My solid second place choice.
-
Xoom
-
A personal favorite. No advertisements on the site, but you do get
e-mail advertisements (that you can opt out of. I opted out of my Xoom
site, but I keep the advertisements coming because they are worthwhile).
-
Lots of handholding, the largest image collection on the web. Includes
on-line conferencing software (chat software) for your site.
-
Tripod
-
Pop-up advertisements, cookie cutter site design.
-
But, Tripod supports FrontPage97 if you are using that software package.
-
GeoCities
-
Features the original browser crashing pop-up advertisements. I generally
refuse to visit.
-
On the other hand, the page building editor is good and you get 11 megabytes
of space.
-
Angelfire
-
Pop-up advertisements.
-
A solid "fair" sort of place.
-
theglobe.com
-
Pop-up advertisements. Will crash some browsers, makes a site look
cheap. Rigid site design.
-
On the other hand, there is more of a sense of community here.
-
Netscape
-
Brash newcomer.
-
Solid oldtimer. An interesting combination.
Also, you can visit AOL for some interesting faqs and tutorials, even though
they do not provide free space to non-AOL members.
http://hometown.aol.com/ and
navipress (in its latest incarnation) is available for free from
aolpress.com.
Next supplement: Graduate programs in ADR.
